St Malo Bakery, Crows Nest (26 October 2014)
Tuesday, October 28, 2014There's a great cafe culture along Crows Nest and according to Urbanspoon, St Malo Bakery is amongst the top picks.
It's a recipe for success - award winning, buzzing with locals, Parisian-feel, dimly lit wooden fit-outs, outdoor pavement seating and freshly baked goods on display.
St Malo Bakery front - very inviting |
Eager wife waiting for a feed |
Usually I'm a big fan of alternative grain salads. Texture is king and the chewiness of pearl-barley complemented the crunch of cherry tomatoes, carrots and celery. Good news ends there. The dish was completely tasteless and I lost interest within two spoonfuls. They really need an interesting dressing (e.g. pesto).
Healthy option - pearl barley and vegetable salad - $9.50 |
Corn fritters and bacon - $16 |
Before leaving, we were desparate for a positive, and found it in the raspberry chocolate brownie.
Raspberry chocolate vs. chocolate brownie - easy choice |
So on account of the above, how did this rate?
Food - 3/10 - tasteless salad, shocking uninspiring corn fritters
Value - 5/10 - all items are <$20, but on what I got served it should be <$10
Other - 2/10 - setting nice, experienced ruined by unhelpful waitress
Overall - 3/10 - great looking counter options, uninspiring cooked menu, can't comment on baked options but everything else tells me never to come here again. Sorry
Today's lesson learnt: 'if you go to an artisan bakery, order bread'. In hindsight this was a rookie error. Perhaps the croissant options are worth a try next time?

They do a lovely fruit loaf, great for topping up carbs for recovery post run :)
ReplyDeleteI do agree I wouldn't often sit in for a meal here. But a great place to grab a delicious bread for home.
Perfect for carb topping up yes and the baked goods look really good in the counter. I think there's much better sit down options close by, but just need to work out where!
